Using a teleprompter is an incredible way to save time and stop doing multiple retakes, but it takes a little practice to sound natural. Here are three tips from broadcasting professionals:
1. Don’t read the whole screen; read the line. Turn on the Eyeline Marker and stare only at that line. Do not move your eyes up and down the screen to read ahead. Let the words come to you.
2. Speak to a person, not a screen. It’s easy to fall into a robotic, monotone voice when reading text. Imagine your best friend is sitting right behind the camera lens, and you are simply telling them a story. Use your hands, smile, and add natural pauses.
3. Adjust the speed to you, not the other way around. Don’t rush to keep up with the text. Set the speed slightly slower than your normal speaking voice. It’s much easier to pause naturally and let the text catch up than it is to speed-read because the prompter is running away from you.
